Hiring a LATAM designer? Look beyond the portfolio Copy Copy Copy Copy Copy

Start with the work behind the work

A polished portfolio can show you what a designer makes. It rarely tells you everything about how they work.

When reviewing a project, ask what the designer owned, which constraints shaped the outcome, and what changed along the way. The most useful conversation often starts with a simple question: “What would you do differently now?”

Treat collaboration as part of the craft

Ask candidates how they share unfinished work, respond to feedback, and explain decisions to people outside design.

If your team works across countries, discuss working hours, language preferences, and communication habits early. “Remote” describes where someone works. It does not explain how you will work together.

Choose for the role you actually have

Your next designer does not need to be exceptional at every discipline. They need the right strengths for your current challenges, with room to grow as the work evolves.

A clear role, an honest conversation, and a thoughtful review of past work give both sides a better basis for making that decision.
